Plus Size Role Models
By Emma Cossey - 24 Jul 2009
The beauty and fashion industry upholds a variety of celebrities
as role models for young women. Kate Moss, Heidi Klum,
Jordan and Twiggy are all hailed as inspirational. What about
a role model for those of us over a size 12? Luckily we do have
some plus size ladies who set examples to aspire to.
Charlotte
Coyle
Charlotte is a plus-sized model from Northern Ireland, who does
more than strut the catwalk. Charlotte recently came up with the
concept for Fat Beauty Contest a channel 4 documentary
for Britains first beauty contest for plus-sized women.
Queen
Latifah
Queen Latifah is not only an Acadamy Award nominated actor, but
also an accomplished musician, model and presenter. She has been
the celebrity spokesperson for Covergirl Cosmetics, and Curvation
ladies underwear. Her popularity is proof that fitting into a
sample size is not the only requirement to continues success.
Oprah
The lady who requires no second name is not only a role model
for plus size ladies, but also for women in general. Oprah has
been open about her struggle with maintaining a steady weight,
and has recently graced the cover of her own magazine O
admitting a weight gain from 160 lbs to 200 lbs. However, weight
issues have not held her back, and she has a huge empire including
a TV show, radio show, magazine, Broadway musical and has helped
launch the careers of Dr. Phil McGraw and Rachael Ray.
Mia
Tyler
Recognise the surname? Mia comes from a family filled with celebrity
royalty, including her half sister Liv Tyler and her Dad, Steven
Tyler from Aerosmith. Mia is primarily a plus size fashion model
and designer, but has also appeared in several TV programs and
films. Mia has come from a difficult background including eating
disorders and drug issues, but now concentrates on promoting a
healthy body acceptance.
